HDR at Desy

Today we see some HDR photographs of the Max von Laue-Halle, as the formerly Gebäude 47c was baptised just recently by Mrs Merkel.

Night over DESY
We start with a fire water pond in moonlight, surrounded by meadow and trees. On the right you can see some workshop of the local university.


Max von Laue-Halle
Now turning by 180 degrees (around the vertical axis), we have the Max von Laue-Halle, housing (parts of) the PETRA III storage ring and the beamlines.


CFEL at night
At the end of the not-any-longer 47c you can see the new CFEL building, a temple of modern science.


PETRA III
On the other end of 47c, the Hamburg branch of EMBL is settled, operating their own beamlines.

For John Miao's experiment at our set-up at PETRA III, we have to prepare a very clean x-ray beam.

The sample is placed about 100 mm after the vacuum tank of the KB mirror system; so air scattering already happens before the x-ray beam can see the sample. To overcome this, we got two nice Tantalum apertures from Yukio Takahashi at Osaka university. They are only two millimetres in front of the sample; everything is very close.


Pilatus 6M
Also very close is the detector: We borrowed a Pilatus 6M from beamline P11; six million independent photon counters are placed just 400 millimetres away from the sample. Almost 100 kilograms bear against the optical table.


Pilatus 6M
The Pilatus can also be used as an ordinary mirror, allowing photographing around the corner. Otherwise, you have no chance to really see the set-up, since it is so full of motors and holders.
